Dennis Ritchie wore this tee-shirt while busy inventing UNICS, later UNIX, at Bell Labs along with Ken Thompson on a DPD-7 Mainframe, “for the lulz” of creating a Space Travel game.
Why “UNICS“? I’m glad you asked: the leading system at this time was named MULTICS, a competent (time-shared) but complex OS. UNICS was a play on words to hint at their “little toy OS” simplicity.
